This design has been on the obverse of the American Gold Eagles since their first release in 1986. 
In 2021, Jennie Norris' design replaced the long-standing reverse created by Miley Busiek, which featured a family of eagles and had been used since the series' inception. Norris' design focuses on a detailed close-up of the bald eagle, America's national bird, capturing its strength and majesty. This transition in design marked a new chapter in the American Gold Eagle series, marrying tradition with modern artistry.
